Welcome to Step Up, Virginia!

Step Up, Virginia provides educationally at-risk children with a better opportunity to learn, achieve, and grow into responsible adults. We do this by providing scholarships for educationally at-risk students so they can receive a better education at the school of their choice. With Step Up, Virginia! scholarships, children gain access to private schools or public-school tutoring and assistance that would otherwise be out of their reach. Struggling students excel with extra support.

Why We Do This
While a great many students excel in Virginia, many do not. Children with handicaps have needs many parents can’t afford. Low-income children frequently need after-school support or additional tutoring. And too many school systems just aren’t doing the job. In places like Richmond, Petersburg and Norfolk, nearly half of all students cannot read on grade level or fail the state math exam. In some cities, on some subjects, that number rises to 80 percent or more.

Step Up, Virginia! focuses on the students who need help the most. These opportunities are made possible by people in our community. Through tax programs, individual donations, workplace giving, planned giving, and more, they enable Virginia’s students to thrive from pre-school through high school and beyond.
